Mo Lamkanfi obtained a Master in Biochemistry in 2000, and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Ghent University in 2004. He subsequently enjoyed postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan and Genentech, USA, respectively with Gabriel Nunez and Vishva Dixit. He currently is Group Leader at the VIB Department of Medical Protein Research, and a tenured professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University in Belgium. In 2015, his research laboratory will move to the VIB Inflammation Research Center (IRC). Mo’s major research interests are how NOD-like receptors (NLRs) and inflammasomes modulate immune responses and how defects in these mechanisms contribute to human disease. Most recently, his lab described the first inflammasome-driven mouse arthritis model; the role of caspase-11 in colitis; and activation mechanisms of the NLRP1b and NLRC4 inflammasomes. His recent recognitions and awards are a major grant of the European Research Council (ERC) in 2011; the Prize of the Flemish Scientific Foundation for Biomedical Sciences of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine in 2013; and the AstraZeneca Foundation Prize for Auto-immune diseases and Rheumatology in 2014.
